Why Use Cummins Fleetguard Filtration

Why Use Cummins Fleetguard Filtration for my New Holland Bale Wagon or Stackcruiser

A Message About Cummins Fleetguard Filtration

Many New Holland and OEM filters are rebranded Fleetguard or Donaldson filters. So why not buy direct.

Over fifty years ago, the foundation was laid for the company that is now Cummins Filtration. Since then, their customers around the world have come to depend on them to provide quality solutions for protecting their equipment.

As the world’s leading designer and manufacturer of filtration, coolant and fuel additive technology for all engine powered systems, Cummins Filtration and their industry-leading Fleetguard products provide the best protection available.

They reached this position by never remaining satisfied with the status quo. From the introduction of the first spin-on bypass filters in 1959 to their completely non-metallic lines of lube, fuel and air filtration technologies, Cummins Filtration keeps pushing the envelope to set the standards of excellence in their business.

Their engineering teams have been recognized as the best minds in this industry, and they work hard to create not just better products but the best possible solutions for their customers’ demands. As they do so, however, they also remain ever mindful of their responsibilities to the environment.

They are committed to creating products to protect the world in which we live – products like their award winning crankcase ventilation systems, which reduce oil drips and blow-by gases; glycerin-based coolant using non-toxic glycerin; and user friendly filters, with no metallic pieces, no adhesives and no paint. Not only are they striving to make better products, they are making their manufacturing processes better. Cummins Fleetguard Filtration has committed to a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2015. Cummins Fleetguard Filtration takes this commitment seriously, and they are taking the necessary steps to meet or exceed this goal, such as designing new facilities to reduce the need for electric lighting.

By adhering to the Cummins Fleetguard Filtration core values, using Six Sigma tools and incorporating lean manufacturing and business processes, Cummins Fleetguard Filtration continues to grow and improve. Fifty years ago, they had a handful of employees. Today they have operations on six continents and several thousand employees. They are the people who make up Cummins Fleetguard Filtration, and they are the company upon which you can depend.

Cummins Fleetguard Filtration Above The Rest:

The Importance of Air Filtration

For every liter of fuel consumed, a modern diesel engine typically requires 15,000 liters of air! Therefore, poor air quality can significantly impact engine wear and performance. As a result, effective Air Filtration is essential, to protect the engine from particulate contaminants. Symptoms of poor maintenance include plugged Air Filters, reduced engine performance and higher fuel consumption.

Dust >> Restriction >> Filter Life Time
The life of an engine is determined by the rate at which it ingests abrasive contaminants. Approximately 1 gram of dust per HP is sufficient to destroy an engine. Unlike the human body, which has different filtration systems and sensors to warn of bad air, the Air Filter is the only protection on an engine against potential damage. It has one chance, and one chance only, to remove the dust. As the filter progressively removes contaminants, the level of restriction increases.
Like a congested nose, it takes an engine more effort to draw in air when the Air Filter is blocked. The engine will find it difficult to breathe due to high restriction – reducing power output and increasing fuel consumption. In order to have a visual indication of filter life, a Restriction Indicator should be mounted on the clean side of the housing.

Air Filter Service Life
OEM’s use various techniques to extend the service life of an Air Filter. Options include:
• Pre-cleaners such as fins fitted to the element, Air Cleaner housings with offset air intakes or ejective Air Pre-filtration units,
• Air Filters with larger media areas – such as Fleetguard’s Magnum range
• Restriction indicator gauges (optimizing filter life)

Fleetguard Product Range
Cummins Filtration has a full range of replacement Air Filter elements, both PU and conventional metal- ended. These cover the many varieties of filter designs found in the market place. In addition, our broad product line also offers a range of Air Cleaner housings in composite and metal options complemented by accessories such as hoses, clamps, brackets and weather hoods etc.

The Importance of Fuel Filtration

Whilst diesel fuel is the engine’s energy source, it also performs several other key roles:
• Cooling – by circulating through the injection system and absorbing unwanted heat
• Lubrication – by separating the moving components in the fuel feed and injection pumps
• Cleansing – by transferring contaminants to the Fuel Filter(s), where they are removed.

Fuel contamination – the biggest enemy
The enemies of diesel fuel are:
• Dirt and sediment – when present in the fuel system, they will result in blockage of the filter and increased wear within the fuel system.
• Water – is the greatest concern because it is the most common. It can be introduced into the fuel during the refueling process: through condensation inside the fuel storage tank, or due to poor house-keeping practices. The effects of water in diesel fuel can be serious, causing injector tips to blow off, corrosion and reduced fuel lubricity, resulting in premature wear to pumps and injectors.
• Organic contaminants – Asphaltines and paraffin wax, which are residual components from the refining process, will block screens, strainers, filters and even hoses.

The Fleetguard Product Solution
There are two types of Fuel filter:
• Fuel/Water Separators (FS) – Separate water from the fuel and remove large contaminants
• Fuel Filters (FF) – Remove the smaller contaminant particles from the fuel

The Cummins Filtration fuel product line also includes:
• Fuel Strainers (in-tank and inline) to capture very large particles
• Fuel Processors (Fuel Pro™, Diesel Pro™, Industrial Pro™, Sea Pro™)
• Modular Fuel Water Separators and priming pumps
• Slow release, lubricity-enhancing Fuel Filters
• Fuel Heaters, Water Sensors and Restriction Indicators
• A full range of FF and FS replacement products covering the many varieties of filter designs found in the market place.

The Importance of Lube Filtration

Lubricating Oil is the ‘life blood’ of an engine, without which it would rapidly stop working. Lube Filters remove impurities and the wear-causing contaminants from the engine’s oil, rather like kidneys purify the blood. If the Lube Filters are not doing an effective job, engine life can be radically shortened. Lube Oil not only allows the internal components of an engine to move by keeping the various parts separate from each other, it also carries out a number of other very important tasks:
• Removing Heat
• Forming a seal between the cylinder wall and the piston rings
• Cleaning internal surfaces
• Transporting debris to the Filter

Advanced Filtration:
Synthetic media provides higher capacity, greater efficiency and less restriction than traditional cellulose. Fleetguard developed its own in-house production of synthetic, multi-layered medium called Stratapore™. The very wide range of Fleetguard replacement Oil filters meet or exceed OEM specifications for the huge range of diesel engines in operation today.

Prevention is better than cure!

Contamination control is best achieved through exclusion. This means that keeping the dust and water out in the first place is preferable to simply relying on filtration to manage it. This is a maintenance issue with housekeeping and cleanliness being vital. As seals, wipers and surfaces wear or become damaged, more dirt is ingested by the system. Therefore worn parts need to be replaced as soon as they are found. Breather filters need to be serviced and changed and any filling equipment used for topping up the fluid must be clean before use.

Question & Answers

Q: What is a micron?
A: A micron is a thousandth of a millimeter or a millionth of a meter or .000039 of an inch. Micron is the unit of measure used to determinate the size of particles in a fluid which are filtered out by the filter.
Q: What is the difference between Absolute and Nominal micron rating?
A: Micron rating is the size of particles which are filtered out by filters at a certain efficiency. When this efficiency is at least 98.6%, we speak about absolute micron rating/filtration. Nominal micron rating is just a commercial trick for all efficiencies lower than 98.6%, meaning that for the same micron rating (for ex. 10 µ) in the case of nominal rating, not all particles will be captured in the filter as in the case of absolute micron rating.
Q: Why doesn’t Cummins Filtration publish micron ratings for all its filters?
A: Generally this is not necessary. Cummins Filtration filters are designed to meet or exceed OEM specifications.
Q: In your catalog, under Product Guide, you mention a by-pass setting for lube and hydraulic filters. What is this?
A: Each lube filter and hydraulic filter system is equipped with a by-pass valve to ensure that main components in the system are sufficiently lubricated independently-if oil is cold or the filter is blocked by excessive contamination. This by-pass valve can be located in the filter or filter head. Depending on the OEM manufacturer’s specification, the setting of the by-pass valve can be different. So in the Cummins Filtration Master Filter Catalog, we mention the setting of this valve (14.7 PSI=1 bar). If no setting is mentioned, no by-pass valve is mounted in the filter.
Q: In your catalog, under Product Guide, you mention anti-drainback valve for lube and hydraulic filters. What is this?
A: An anti- drainback valve is fitted in filters for applications where there is risk that the filter is running empty. This situation should be avoided-otherwise wear will occur on the moving parts, as these parts are not yet lubricated by oil.
